Walcha Shire is located in the New England Tablelands region of NSW. Walcha is located half way between Sydney and Brisbane on the crossroads of the Oxley Highway and Thunderbolts Way.

Its major industries are agriculture in the production of livestock, wool and timber. The Shire is home to national parks, including parts of the world heritage listed central eastern rainforest reserves, a network of excellent trout waters and is known for its trout fishing.
